Les Pulp Filles

Meet Brianna and Cailie, two wandering souls and the visionaries behind The Pulp Girls. With creativity evenly flowing between the two, these sisters have turned their love of fashion, vintage clothing and photography into an online boutique that brings you one-of-a-kind pieces. Check out the interview below where we talk fashion trends, witches and why vintage is better.

How did the Pulp Girls get started?

Brianna: Well, we both actually starting buying vintage clothing individually a while ago, and after a year or so, we had a kind of large collection and started talking about selling.
Cailie: We also had a lot of free time, and we wanted to have a creative outlet that still managed to bring our fashion senses to the masses through the vintage we hand selected.
B: Our first shop was on eBay. We called it Girl Anachronism Vintage, but because that proved hard for people to remember, we changed to Pulp Vintage when we started our own shop.
C: We chose The Pulp Girls ultimately because the moniker is easier to remember and everything, and it encompasses everything we do beyond vintage clothing.

What is each of your individual roles in The Pulp Girls?

C: A lot of it is doing the same job! We both shoot the clothing, both buy and hem clothing, both style… both of even do the hair and makeup pretty evenly. Some things one of us will do more than the others, like Brianna handles a lot more of the shipping, and I do all the illustrations.
B: Yeah… and in shoots, we both have an ultimate look in mind, and it’s cool to get to that point by combining two perspectives. That’s why we share the camera. And the one who’s not shooting is generally holding all the models’ stuff.

What is your favorite vintage piece you each own?

C: I really did love my blue giant 60′s sunglasses before they mysteriously broke at a photoshoot…  And my ankle length suede coat, and a floor length maxi sheer lace dress!
B: I feel like I always just sell everything I love.  I do love my vintage combat boots very dearly.

If you could ban any current trend forever, which would it be?

C: Hmmm… like bright pink lipstick, Snookie-inspired barbie lipstick. and…
B: We are having such a hard time with this. I mean, I don’t really have a problem with any of the current trends, so I guess we’re going with that old and always awful standby… UGGS.

Describe Pulp Girls in 3 words:

C: Crazy, exciting, spontaneous
B: Exciting, electrifying, expressive

Currently playing on itunes:

C: “Desiree” Arcesia, “Stranger Than Kindness” Fever Ray, “The Wheel” Bill Callahan
B: It’s winter, so The Cure and Leonard Cohen play a lot. Whenever I have to think about songs, I draw a blank on them!

Photography is a huge part of what you guys do, what inspires your shoots?

B: The ethereal and the wild. I like fantasy and scifi, so the strange and otherworldly in shoots makes me immensely happy. And witches. We’re also inspired by other photographers!
C: And I basically try to think of the weirdest things we can get away with, and it usually ends up being pretty gothic.

What is your advice to anyone who is intimidated by buying vintage?

C: IT’S NOT GROSS!! Used means it’s been loved, and you’ll usually have a much more exciting sense of style into everyday wear.
B: It’s also not necessary to be clad in head-to-toe vintage. Just mix in a vintage piece in any outfit, whether it’s a top, a dress, shoes, jewelry, shorts… really, vintage is so cool.
C: What I really love about vintage is that no one can ever have the same thing as you, and that’s why you should buy it!

Currently wearing:

B: LOTS of patterned tights and patterned shorts, with graphic tees and cardigans or sweaters. Maybe some thigh high socks if it’s super chilly.
C: Woodsman socks and long lacy black dresses to match my semi-fresh black hair dye job. And our matching pentacle necklaces. And a nose chain.

Favorite magazines for inspiration:

B: Nylon, of course. Foam has some lovely editorials as well. And science and history magazines a la National Geographic.
C: And we like reading Tavi’s online magazine as well. Those special Time (or Life, I’m not sure which one) magazines that have all those amazing pictures of places that you’ve never heard of. And mobster magazines. …those are important.
